The Naruto Whirlpools

The Naruto Whirlpools

The Naruto WhirlpoolsWhat kind of place is it?

The Naruto Whirlpools are a spectacular natural phenomenon located in the Naruto Strait, between Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture and Minamiawaji City in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. These whirlpools are among the largest in the world, with some reaching up to 20 meters in diameter during spring tides. They are formed due to the tidal difference between the Seto Inland Sea and the Kii Channel. As massive volumes of seawater rush through the narrow 1.3 km-wide strait, the fast-moving current—reaching speeds of up to 20 km/h—creates swirling whirlpools, especially around high and low tide. This happens twice a day, making it a consistent yet dynamic spectacle.
The best time to see the whirlpools is during spring tides—particularly around full moon and new moon—approximately one hour before and after the peak of high or low tide. The months of March to April and September to October offer the best weather for a comfortable visit. Visitors can check the Naruto Whirlpool tide schedule in advance to plan their trip accordingly.
There are several ways to enjoy the view. Sightseeing boats offer close-up experiences: the large Uzushio Kanchosen provides a stable ride, while the smaller high-speed Wonder Naruto brings you thrillingly close to the action. Alternatively, you can walk along the “Uzu no Michi” walkway under the Ōnaruto Bridge, 45 meters above the sea, where glass panels in the floor allow a direct view of the whirlpools beneath. For panoramic views and photos, Naruto Park and Senjojiki Plateau are also excellent spots.
Recognized as one of the Three Great Tidal Currents in the world—alongside Seymour Narrows in Canada and the Strait of Messina in Italy—the Naruto Whirlpools are a truly awe-inspiring natural event. For the best experience, be sure to check the tide calendar before your visit and time your arrival to match the peak currents.
